When I first set out to write my health memoir, people warned me it would be painful—that I’d be forced to relive dark times from my past. But, to my surprise, the process was actually more illuminating and cathartic than anything else. One thing is sure–writing about it was a whole lot easier than going through it. Revisiting the good, the bad, and the downright ugly felt different with the benefit of time and perspective—it was like finally getting the last word in an argument years later.
Why Share My Story?
My biggest motivation for opening up about my health journey was to help others and leave a lasting legacy. Facing a serious medical challenge is like planning a wedding for the first time—at the start, you have no idea what you’re doing. But by the end, after navigating all the mistakes, professional opinions, and unexpected twists, you’ve learned more than you ever imagined.
I won’t claim to be an expert. Still, after surviving three heart surgeries, cancer, and a prostatectomy, I’ve gained plenty of insight into resilience, research, attitude, working with the medical system, rehabilitation, and achieving the best possible outcome. If my experiences can make someone else’s journey a little easier, then sharing them is well worth it.
The Writing Process: Piecing It All Together
To bring my story to life, I started by creating a timeline of key events and then filled in the details as best as I could remember. I also did a deep dive into medical research—learning about procedures like TAVR, conditions like neuropathy, options to address serious health issues, etc. so I could explain them in a clear, accessible way. Along the way, I gained an even deeper understanding of what I had been through and how to go forward. They say knowledge is power, and I couldn’t agree more. The more I learned about my conditions, medical options, and hospital experiences, the more empowered I felt. That’s exactly what I want for you, too.
Learn from My Experience
If you or a loved one ever have to face a serious health challenge, I want you to feel prepared—not just overwhelmed. That’s why I wrote this book. So, keep following my blog, and better yet, grab a copy of I Left My Heart Valve in Cleveland… and My Prostate in Chicago. My story is filled with hard-earned lessons, a bit of humor, and the kind of insights that can only come from someone who’s been there.
Because when life throws you into the deep end, sometimes the best thing you can have is a good roadmap and a positive attitude.
